Eating
Chiang Mai is home to a huge number of restaurants, cafés and food outlets of every kind…there is truly something for everyone, whether gourmet, foodie, vegetarian, or just plain ‘eat-to live’. International cuisine, including Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Mexican, French, Italian, Filipino, American and even several traditional British fish and chip shops sit side by side with restaurants serving Thai and Lanna delicacies and popular dishes such as Pad Thai, green curry and delicious papaya saled. The usual fast-food outlets are scattered around, some in the tourist areas and several in the major supermarkets and shopping malls. There’s so much choice at reasonable prices that most expats decide there’s no point in cooking!
At the high end, famous restaurants such as the Coq d’Or specialise in fine French cuisine prepared by experienced chefs, with prices to match the quality of their dishes. Great for that special occasion! Restaurants in the city’s 4 and 5-star hotels provide varied and delicious lunchtime ‘all you can eat’ buffets as well as good value evening meals and suppers. The Chiang Mai Grandview Hotel is a good example of a well-balanced lunchtime buffet and well worth a visit if you are in the area. Fusion foods, a mix of Thai and Western, appeal to many, with restaurants such The House and Ginger providing a chic, comfortable environment and interesting food. A number of restaurants specialise in excellent Italian food, a great favourite with the expat community. .
Vegetarians are well-catered for, both in specialist restaurants and cafes, and on menus in many other city eateries. A number of British pubs serve traditional British food for those times when nostalgia strikes, and the small but increasing number of ‘fish and chip shops’ present this much-loved dish at least as well as in the UK!

When you’re shopping at lunchtime in the malls or supermarkets, take a look at their ‘food courts’…areas where small outlets serve a number of delicious mostly Thai or Japanese dishes. Local Thai outdoor restaurants and eateries are also well worth a visit, (many expats have their local, often-visited favourites), but check first that the menu includes an English language section. If you don’t feel like cooking, and don’t want to drive to your favourite restaurant, give the local street stalls a try as well…many sellers are very proud of their fresh ingredients and their cooking skills.
