Entertainment
Entertainment in Chiang Mai
If you want entertainment, Chiang Mai’s your city! From classical music concerts performed by visiting artistes as well as local talent, through jazz clubs and bars, marching band concerts, traditional music and dance from the many diverse Thai and ethnic tribal traditions, Thai and Western folk music, events held to promote and raise funds for charities and NGO’s in the city, gatherings, quiz nights, parties and festivals to (dare we mention it?) Karaoke, it’s all here for you.

Chiang Mai is fast becoming a centre for arts, music and culture, not just of Thailand but with a strong international presence and flavour. There are many art galleries in the city, all of which hold regular openings of new and established national and international artists’ work. Chiang Mai University has a flourishing Faculty of Music and the Arts, focusing on Lanna artistic and musical traditions and featuring many concerts and art exhibitions in its on- campus galleries and theatres. Payap University’s Faculty of Music is well-known, and produces some accomplished instrumentalists, all of whom, as part of their finals, give recitals in the university’s concert halls. Jazz lovers will feel very at home in the city; Northgate Jazz Club, full to bursting on weekends, is perhaps the most popular of a number of venues scattered around town.

Festivals in Chiang Mai and its surrounding districts, although not strictly ‘entertainment’, are often the most entertaining events you will ever visit! Always featuring music and dancing, plus the essential and wonderfully noisy traditional Lanna drums, they are treasures of costume, colour, culture and amazingly decorated floats which wind their way along the city’s streets, bursting with joyful locals having the time of their lives! Expect to be dragged into the parade by local people, with a large glass of delicious (and highly alcoholic) brew thrust into your hand and scented garlands thrown round your neck. An unmissable experience.

Every week will see parties, charity and other events and openings of new venues, arranged by both smaller and larger local NGO’s, the venues themselves, businesses, societies or even individuals. There’s always something to do and somewhere to go. If you choose carefully, you can have a great evening out and, at the same time, benefit your favourite local charities.
There are several cinema complexes in Chiang Mai, showing not only sub-titled but also English language movies. Recently released blockbusters such as the latest Harry Potter arrive shortly after their distribution in the West. The annual Bangkok Film festival has a showing in Chiang Mai lasting several weeks and featuring most of the international movies already shown in Bangkok.
On the more serious side, there are lectures, seminars and similar activities to attend, many organised by the universities. Subjects vary from the ever-present global warming controversies, through culture, history and many other fascinating presentations.
Boredom in Chiang Mai? Not possible – in fact, you may need to book a regular night off at home in order to get your breath back!
Chiang Mai to become S.E Asia’s movie production hub
Following several previous reports that Chiang Mai is the next destination for movie moguls wanting to save on production costs, a Los Angeles – based property developer specialising in entertainment industry sites has expressed strong interest in developing a film studio complex close to the city.
Annual Charity Rooftop Party
"One night around the World"
The 5th Annual Charity Rooftop Party will be held on 10 January 2009 at Hillside 4 Plaza & Condominium. So far the previous Rooftop Parties have raised in excess of 3.2m baht for local charities, with the tremendous support of local businesses and residents alike. Every party has been a sell-out event and has become one of the most successful fund raisers in the Northern Thailand.
Chiang Mai Entertainment
Modern Cinemas, plays and musicals are just a few of the things that can be enjoyed almost every evening in Chiang Mai. In addition to the above the traditional Northern Thai Shows are very popular and fantastic experience.
If you are interested in attending any local festivals, the Retire in Chiang Mai team will happy to act as a guide for these events.
